About Canora

In the heart of west Edmonton, Canora is a vibrant residential neighborhood that boasts a rich history. Named after the Canadian Northern Railway, Canora’s name emerged from a 1948 contest to name a new school, reflecting the area’s deep ties to the railway and its evolution over the decades.

Canora’s story begins with the hamlet of West Jasper Place, which rapidly transformed into a village, then a town, all within a remarkable 14-month span following the opening of its school in September 1949. This school, the Canora School, became a cornerstone of the community, though it closed in 1972 and now operates as a daycare facility. The neighborhood itself was officially incorporated into Edmonton in 1964, as Jasper Place amalgamated with the city.

Bounded by key thoroughfares—107 Avenue to the north, 156 Street to the west, Stony Plain Road to the south, and 149 Street to the east—Canora is well-connected to the wider city while maintaining its unique charm.

The Canora Community League, established in 1949, plays an essential role in fostering community spirit. It operates a community hall and an outdoor rink at 152 Street and 104 Avenue, serving as a hub for local events and activities. Canora is known around Edmonton as having the best outdoor ice in the city.

The neighborhood’s residential development began in the 1930s and continued into the 1970s, with a significant number of homes constructed by 1980. Entering into the 2010’s and 2020’s, more and more of the older homes have been replaced with infills.

Today, Canora features a diverse range of housing options, including single-family homes, duplexes, and low-rise apartments. Notably, nearly half of the dwellings are apartments, reflecting a trend towards multifamily living. Approximately 68% of occupied private dwellings are rented, emphasizing the neighborhood’s appeal to a wide variety of residents.

Education is a priority in Canora, with two primary schools serving the community. Brightview Elementary School operates under the Edmonton Public School System, while Holy Cross Elementary/Junior High School is a French Immersion school that is part of the Edmonton Catholic School System. The original Canora School, a significant part of the neighborhood’s history, has transitioned into a daycare, continuing to serve families in the area.

Canora is surrounded by a host of residential neighborhoods, including Mayfield to the northwest, High Park to the north, and Grovenor to the east.
